RADICAL DISCIPLESHIP was created in 2014 as a joint venture of Bartimaeus Cooperative Ministries and Word and World. It is a space designed to animate expressions of Christian faith committed to breaking rank with supremacy of every form. The good news is that there are communities, coming up out of the cracks and corners of empire, rooted in struggle and amplifying hope. On this site, we seek to embody the prophet Micah’s call to act justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with God.
RADICAL DISCIPLESHIP is committed to being collective (welcoming a multiplicity and diversity of voices), convictional (unapologetically theological), constructive (seeking to create a new world out of the shell of the old) and concrete (covering a range of personal and political practices, from reformist to revolutionary).
—————————————-
To act justly is to learn and name the ways that social, political, economic and religious systems oppress; to work to transform them, refusing to give in to apathy or cynicism; and to learn from those who have waged nonviolent struggle before us.
To love mercy is to live in solidarity with those who are shut in, locked down and cast out, whether or not systems change.
To walk humbly with God is to embrace practices of prayer, meditation, fasting, confession, Bible study, spiritual direction, recovery and therapy; to be sustained by the God made known in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus; and to believe that “unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word” (Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.).
Thanks for the site. You may want to notice that in the Jan 9 blog by Vincent Harding is the phrase “to magnificent,” which confused me for a while until I realized it was supposed to be “too magnificent.”
Also, I find having all the posts listed on a single page inconvenient. I was trying to get to the bottom of the page; it took forever, and I finally gave up. It would help, I think, to organize them in separate pages with a table of contents or index of some sort. My own blog host (blogspot.com) does this automatically.
Please give my best wishes to Ched.

Thank you for the site. I wish I could say I enjoyed it, but as I think Ched would say, I am too “white”. Thank you again for all the work.
Oppressed…
I don’t want at all to come off sounding like a Bible thumper or in any fashion negative. But all my life I myself have been denied opportunity to serve in my chosen profession due to other discrimination and prejudice based on certain OTHER invisible factors. Until everyone is willing to let everyone else HAVE HIS OR HER SAY (and there was good reason only Males and Females were paired together at the ORIGINAL RAINBOW unveiling in the Torah’s Book of Genesis!), and don’t deny that this is not happening now, there will continue to be irreconcilable divide in this nation. More is the pity. It does not have one thing in the world to do with gender or gender identity or whatever the current fad of the day is to call this thingamajig
Steve, despite your disclaimer, you did come across as both a Bible thumper and negative. That said, we believe that discrimination and prejudice based on just about anything is contrary to the will of God. It saddens me that it seems like you don’t hold the same convictions that we do in regards to gender and gender identity.
As I previously stated, you and all your ilk are not at all LISTENING. Reread if you will relevant passages relating to “oppression” in Ralph Ellison’s ‘The Invisible Man’ [aha–a politically incorrect reference to male oppressive gender-identity; please forgive my sardony] … [where there is an oppression, there must of necessity also be both an oppressor and an oppressee–if there is such a word], and do not ever stereotype me as any kind of gender identity-fixated whatever the current fad of the day is to call this thingamajig. Sorry I am more of a philologist and a rhetorician than an “agree with everyone on my side and disagree with everyone on the other side of the aisle” lockstep anti-Thoreau pro-Emerson neo-conformist, if you can possibly catch my drift, or else you are just not trying to make the effort, in which case I have wasted my breath this morning, and the clock tells me I am way past out of time. GODSPEED
Important statements are being ignored put on The Christ mind which is neither male nor female neither Jew nor G entile neither bond nor free .
Thank you for this blog. I read often your words that are exactly my words but you say them with a much clearer way.
I thought I made myself crystal clear already, but maybe not!

Curious to know if you are putting out a Lenten devotional (your Advent one was incredible) or whether you recommend a good one for this year?
Thanks for this question and sorry to be responding late! We would love to put out a Lenten devotional. It is in the back of our minds. It didn’t happen this year, but we are visioning towards other print projects in the coming year. More soon.
I have noticed you don’t monetize your site, don’t waste
your traffic, you can earn extra bucks every month because you’ve got high quality content.

Hey great work! Can you provide any details about the above photo, the occasion and participants shown? Keep up the wonderful work.
Mark Taylor, Princeton Seminary
Hi Mark! I love your book Executed God and all your “radical” work in the classroom and beyond! Our banner pic shows Rosa Parks and other Black women leading a march down Woodward Ave in Detroit, which became her home for the second half of her life. Radical Discipleship is headquartered in Detroit and we are committed to taking cues from Black faith and struggle as a primary lens to see God and the world.

Thank you for all your hard work. I find the lectionary commentaries very helpful. I also find the posts that I receive in my inbox each day – inspiring and informative. So glad you exist.

I am a pastor in the Church of the Brethren. A 300+ year old denomination in the anabaptist tradition and one of the three historic peace churches along with the Mennonites and the Quakers. I appreciate your words, and from the look at some of the responses, you’re upsetting the right people. G-d bless you and your ministry.
