Decolonizing Palestine

Introducing a new online course from The Alternative Seminary.

DECOLONIZING PALESTINE: Settler Colonial Theory in Conversation with Palestinian Liberation Theology

January 8 – 29, 2024
7:00 – 9:00 pm EST

Led by Rev. Amy Yoder McGloughlin

Decolonizing Palestine is a wake-up call for people interested in Israel/Palestine to recognize the reality on the ground, to reflect critically and prophetically on the scripture, and to engage in a new paradigm.”  — Mitri Raheb

The war in Gaza has awakened the Christian community to the plight of Palestinians, questions about land of ancient and modern Israel, and concerns over antisemitism.  In this moment, Christians are being confronted by the impact of our theology on geopolitics and it has left so many of us confused, frustrated, and silent.

Two weeks before the war began, Palestinian liberation theologian, Mitri Raheb, released his latest book, Decolonizing Palestine:  The Land, The People, The Bible.  This book contains a much-needed framework to understand what’s happening in Israel and Palestine, and to address the questions that often come up as folks struggle to understand the history and context of modern-day Palestine.

Join Pastor Amy Yoder McGloughlin as she leads a four-week book study on Rev. Raheb’s book.  We’ll discuss a chapter each week, and we will engage with Palestinian guest speakers as we unravel our colonial mindset and envision a world where all are liberated from oppression.

Amy is a Mennonite pastor.  She travels to Palestine every year and volunteers with Community Peacemaker Teams, an organization that monitors human rights violations in the West Bank and stands in solidarity with Palestinians using nonviolent practices. Her last Alternative Seminary Class was on Mitri Raheb’s previous book, Faith in the Face of Empire.

A donation of $50 is recommended, to cover the costs associated with having Palestinian guest speakers, but please pay what you can.  Registration is required.  The deadline for registration is December 30.

The Alternative Seminary is a program of biblical and theological study and reflection designed to foster an authentic biblical witness in the modern world.

“Occupation will keep triggering resistance. No one can relinquish people’s quest for freedom. Without justice there will be no peace. It is high time to decolonize Palestine so that our people can live in dignity and reach the potential that God has for them.” – Mitri Raheb
