Living The Gospel Revolution

Another compelling offering from The Alternative Seminary

The Sermon on the Mount: Living the Gospel Revolution in Our World Today

EIGHT-WEEK ONLINE CLASS

Thursdays, September 15 – November 10

7:00 – 9:00 pm EST

(NOTE: No class on October 20)

The times we live in seem apocalyptic – war and violence, political extremism and rising authoritarianism, staggering disparities of wealth, ecocide.  Meanwhile, much of the church in the United States (and around the world) is increasingly succumbing to a militant and dangerous Christian nationalism.

As part of the growing resistance to the Nazi regime, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and fellow members of the Confessing Church formed an underground seminary.  Their theological formation was centered in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), which Bonhoeffer increasingly saw as the core of authentic Christian faith, especially in a time of crisis and evil.

This, too, may be a time when people of faith and conscience need to immerse ourselves in Jesus’ radical manifesto of the reign of God / the Beloved Community. This eight-week online series will explore the Sermon on the Mount with specific attention to what it may be saying to us in our historical context.  We will wrestle together with these powerful texts and how they challenge us to create a personal and communal life rooted in Jesus’ revolutionary teachings.

This course will be facilitated by Will O’Brien, coordinator of The Alternative Seminary.  The cost for this course will be $100 (or whatever you can afford).

Registration is required. You can register at this link:
